Importance of Constant UV Disinfection.
UV Lamp Depot - December 2008
Importance of Constant UV Disinfection.
All UV disinfection systems are designed to offer
around-the-clock protection from disease-causing pathogens in
water. The constant on condition of this system design ensures
there are no accidents arising from contaminated water getting
past a system with a non-functioning UV lamp. This can possibly
occur during lamp start-up and shutdown while water is flowing
through the system.
The consequences of accidental contamination (from a
non-functioning UV lamp) include not only possible ill effects
from contaminated water, but also the system will require a
“chlorine shock” to sterilize the system post UV after an
accidental contamination occurs.
UV lamp life is generally considered to be impaired in a system
with a constantly on-off lamp cycle which leads to extra
expense in replacement lamps. Generally speaking, costs to
maintain our UV systems are minimal when compared to the
potential costs of accidental contamination during start-up of
a on-off type UV system. Additionally, on-off systems may
require additional components such a flow-meter and controller,
which obviously adds to the cost of this type of system.
It’s our belief that an on-off type of system would defeat the
main purpose of a UV disinfection system which is on-demand
water disinfection on a continual basis and the peace-of-mind
that goes with it.
